Background
Professor van Houten is the head of the research group” Design, Production and Management” of the University of Twente. He graduated in mechanical engineering (1977) at the Eindhoven University of Technology. In 1991 he obtained a PhD of the University of Twente. Current research topics are scenario based design, synthetic environments, virtual and augmented reality, haptic devices and design support for mechatronic systems. In 2005, together with the Thales Company, he has founded TXchange.

Professor van Houten is member of the management team of the Faculty of Engineering Technology, is responsible for the development of the BSc/MSc program in industrial design engineering and the international Masters program industrial design and manufacturing (with the Universities of Dortmund, Strathclyde and Aalborg). He is scientific director of the ‘National Research School on Integral Manufacturing Innovation’ (IPV), is member of the board of the ‘Industrial Design Centre’ and member of the council of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP).
Involvement
Professor Van Houten is involved into the DfU research program as the promoter of Frederik Hoolhorst.
