Research target DUT

The society is the continuous incentive for research at the Delft University of Technology (DUT). In here, research is carried out in order to find solutions for society’s present and future demands. Fundamental research is part of this, because DUT aims at finding solutions for tomorrow’s problems.

Main research areas Industrial Design Engineering – Applied Ergonomics and Design

The section Applied Ergonomics and Design (AED) bridges the core competencies of evaluating the specific user-product interaction and generating knowledge about users groups. Within the section the following five research areas can be distinguished:

  • Usability research, looking into the interaction between, product, user and environment.
  • Cognitive aspects including the situatedness of the interaction.
  • Digital models of the physical user aspects related to product interaction.
  • Health care, in cooperation with several hospitals.
  • Cultural diversity and design, focusing on developing a methodology for designing in a global market.
How does DfU fit the defined research area

All enounced areas have a focus on how generate and integrate knowledge about user groups into new designs. Within AED, one research group is performing research regarding cognitive and cultural aspects of users related to product interaction. Another group is studying usage observation and design tools based on observational techniques. Some researchers within this group have a special focus on how designers perform research and how they integrate this research in design practice.
