Designing for a moving target - from functionality to usability to experience
From the village commons to Facebook, the designer has to grow with the world.
Prof.dr. Gerrit C. van der Veer, Open University Netherlands and University of Sardinië, President ACM SIGCHI
The history of human-centered design reflects creation and use of artifacts through the centuries. But the challenges of current design for information and communication technology are manifold: Users continue to have new requirements; the target user and audience group broadens and includes many cultures and changing contexts of use. How can we educate designers in (and for) this changing world? Observations of design students in varying cultures does not solve the problem, but at least it inspires our understanding.

Usability in a productive print environment
User Experience Design for high production printers, the link between technology and users
Abbie Vanhoutte MSc & Robert Eijlander MSc - usability engineer and interaction designer at Océ Design, Océ-Technologies B.V.
Océ develops printing systems for professional environments, where productivity and speed are important requirements. Operators have to keep these systems running. They cannot afford to loose time between different print jobs, even if various paper types are needed. To support this, profound knowledge is required of users and how they perform their tasks. Through the case of the VarioPrint 6250 we will illustrate how Océ Design has developed a user friendly solution.

The challenges in interaction design for consumer and professional electronics
Cees van Dok MSc – Executive Creative Director of Frog Design Europe
Usability engineering and interaction design have become thoroughly established disciplines in software and web development, more than in professional and consumer electronics. However, that needs to change, as today’s professional and consumer electronics have in fact become powerful computers. Cees van Dok wil explore the specific challenges of creating usable consumer and professional electronics and what can we learn from the world of web and software development.
No silver bullet - why making usable consumer electronics requires organizational change.
What are barriers and enablers for usability in practice, and how to deal with them.
Jasper van Kuijk MSc – researcher at TU Delft
There is a considerable amount of theory and methods available for usability engineering and user-centered design. But somehow unusable electronic consumer products are still entering the market. How is that possible? In four case studies Jasper van Kuijk studied what the barriers and enablers for usability in practice are, and how to deal with them.
